I Have What I Need to Help Me Find a Job: An Attitude That Works

11 Feb 13 - 04:08

Telling yourself “I have everything I need to help me find a job” can make a real difference to your job hunt. A positive mindset is one of your greatest assets in a tough job market.

A proactive paradigm allows you to approach potential opportunities with genuine enthusiasm and energy. This in turn allows you to make a positive impression on your interviewers. The right attitude can help job seekers get their dream positions.

Here are some tips to help you approach job interviews with a winning attitude.

Use Career Changes as Opportunities to Follow Your Passions

Cultivating the right mindset should ideally start long before you enter the interview room. One of the first steps is to see a career change or break as an opportunity to refine your career path.

Many professionals fall into their career path by chance. Several others end up choosing career paths that do not offer them the things/achievements they truly value. A deviation in your career path or a sudden layoff can actually be a blessing in disguise, since it offers an opportunity for introspection and recalibration. Tell yourself that “these changes will help me find a job that I love” to put yourself in the right frame of mind.

If you have savings put by, you can even take this opportunity to take a break from work or to acquire a fresh set of skills. This turns a potentially negative event into an opportunity for renewal and growth.

Volunteer or Work For Commission

Do not sit idle while waiting for responses from head hunters or recruiters. Rather, use the opportunity to develop valuable skills and experience that can help you in your future career. Full time employment is not the only option available to those who wish to expand their skill sets.

Volunteering for non-profit organizations in a capacity similar to your career path is a great way to build up experience and goodwill. For instance, if you are in marketing or sales, you can help your local shelter (or any charity of your choice) optimize their fundraising efforts and get more sponsorship.

You can also work for commissions, instead of a fixed salary, on a short-term basis. In addition to monetary benefits and/or personal fulfillment, this also presents you in a positive light in an interview. Interviewers see you as a person who, as the saying goes, can make lemonade when life gives them lemons.

Be Honest and Positive

Always be both honest and positive when finally facing the interview panel. Explain your reasons for leaving your previous position truthfully, but in brief. Move on to underline the proactive things you have done since then. End by saying that you are eager to get back into saddle. Mention how the new skills you have learnt can help your potential employers.

Finally, tell family and friends “I need your support and encouragement to help me find a job”, to get valuable assistance.
